Templeton Lecture

Dr Nicholas Lombardo, OP, gave a lecture entitled 'Thomas Aquinas on the Emotions' at St Edmund's on Thursday, 3rd May. Dr Lombardo is currently an Assistant Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at the Catholic University of America. The lecture was made possible because of support from the Templeton Foundation.

VHI: The beginning

The occasion of the College's Norfolk Commemoration allowed the first Director of the Von Hugel Institute, Rev. Dr. Frank McHugh, to meet with the current Director, Prof. John Loughlin. Prof. Loughlin and Fr McHugh agreed to commemorate the VHI's Silver Jubilee by organising a reunion for all those involved in the work of the VHI since its foundation in 1987.

In praise of civil society

Dr Austen Ivereigh, a member of 'Citizens UK' and currently a co-ordinator for 'Catholic Voices' gave a robust defence of civil society at the final VHI seminar of the academic year. Dr Ivereigh spoke of the importance accorded to civil society in Catholic Social Teaching and how economic, political and social changes in the last century had served to threaten civil society and aggrandise the state and market.

Planning for a new Egypt

Professor John Loughlin, Director of the VHI, has been assisting the United Nations-Habitat and the Egyptian government to develop a new system of regional governance and planning for Egypt. After many years of dictatorship and a highly centralized administrative system, Egypt, like many other countries in the world, has been moving towards a more decentralized system.

Director of VHI given award by French Government

Professor John Loughlin, Director of the VHI and Fellow of St Edmund's College, was appointed an Officier in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Government in 2010. He received the award at a ceremony at the French Embassy's Cultural Centre in March 2012. The Ordre des Palmes Académiques is the second oldest order of chivalry and was established by Napoleon I in 1808. It is award to French citizens for services to higher education in France and to non-French citizens who make a significant contribution to French culture and learning.

Links with Caritas in Veritate Foundation

The Von Hugel Institute has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Caritas in Veritate Foundation based in Geneva. The Foundation, whose Director Dr Matthias Nebel is a past associate of the VHI, is presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to the United Nations in Geneva and aims to make a practical and effective impact on the international stage. It promotes Christian values and the social teaching of the Church through publications, meetings and conferences, predicated on the ethical foundation of natural law and the complementarity of faith and reason.

New Seminar Programme: Education and Human Development

Archbishop of Birmingham to deliver 2012 Lattey Lecture

The Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Rev. Bernard Longley, is to deliver the 2012 Lattey Lecture.

The Lattey Lecture was founded by Fr Reginald Fuller to commemorate the foundation of the Catholic Biblical Association at St Edmund's College in 1940 by Fr Cuthbert Lattey, S.J.

New Director for Von Hugel Institute

Professor John Loughlin, Acting Chair of the Von Hugel Institute, has been appointed as its new Director. He was appointed to the VHI 2011 and has been leading it since May 2011. Professor Loughlin is the VHI's fifth Director since its foundation twenty-five years ago. Three of his predecessors were priests.
